Roxanne

I woke with a gasp, my eyes blinking open in the dim light as I tried to figure out where I was. I wasn’t dead, I knew that much, which was a surprise in and of itself. The pillow my face was resting on smelled like the bar and Tina’s perfume, which calmed me a little.

A second later, Iain peeked in through the door with Remi and another man on his heels. His low rumble of a voice called out to me from the doorway. “Roxanne? You okay?”

“You’re alive?” I breathed with relief. Seeing the two of them whole once more soothed some tension in me that I hadn’t been expecting.

“We are,” he replied with a small smile. It was meant to be reassuring, but there was tension around his eyes, making me think that there was still bad news coming. “Remi and I have asked a mage to come take a look at you, if that’s okay?”

“I’m fine, really,” I said, pushing myself up into a sitting position. My head spun, but I tried to keep my eyes focused on the one man who’d been helpful, whom I wanted as a general.

“I know, but I’d feel better if someone who knew about fae looked you over. I think Remi would too, right?” He glanced over at his friend, who nodded sharply.

“I had no idea men were so delicate.” I chuckled.

“Not all the time, but we are known to have emotions every now and then,” Iain said, the smile evident in his voice.

“Fine, you can send the mage in if you want. You and Remi are welcome to stay as well, to make sure he does everything to your satisfaction.”

“We wouldn’t want to impose,” Remi said, looking at Iain, clearly starting to feel uncomfortable.

“I’ve been unconscious in your bed for who knows how long. I wouldn’t think you’re the one imposing.”

Iain smiled and shook his head. When he stepped to the side, I got a better look at the other man, and Iain said, “Roxanne, this is Dezi. Dezi, Roxanne.”

I looked over the other man, a smile plastered on my face. He was almost as tall as Iain but had more of Remi’s build. His skin was the color of terracotta clay, and the white T-shirt he was wearing highlighted that. Magic radiated out of him. Dark hair and eyes only drew me to him even more. It didn’t hurt that he had some sexy scruff going on, either. Seeing the three of them standing together like that made me question my choices to that point. If men like this existed, why hadn’t I been hanging out with them more? I bet they were amazing in bed.

“Nice to meet you,” Dezi said as he slowly approached the side of the bed.

“You too.”

“So, you were unconscious when Iain found you, and he took you to the hospital where he realized you were fae, and then you passed out again as he was bringing you back here. Is that right?”

“Not quite,” I said before quickly going over the events of the day before.
